There are many different aspects that come into play when speaking about adoptions. You have the adoptive family, the birth parent(s), the child and family and friends on all sides. And depending on when, where and how the child is adopted, you are looking at many diverse situations. It is imperative that everyone is taken care of emotionally, physically and mentally. And that is exactly what I assist each person in achieving.

Identifying personal and family values allows for all to know and talk about what is truly important as an individual and as a family. When an older child is adopted into a family, some of the child’s values have already started to develop as well as some traditions. Blending values and traditions opens up a space for ALL of the members to know that they have a place within the family unit, no matter how old the child is when they enter. For example; when you have a Caucasians family adopt an Asian child, bringing in some of the Asian culture into the family routines and traditions will assist the child as it grows and bonds with the family by believing that he or she has contributed to the family and that where they came from matters and is respected. And importantly, children who are from different countries, ethnicities and family backgrounds are connected to a heritage that defines part of who they are. You can honor each person and the contribution each one is by incorporating what is important to them and what they value about themselves and their history. This opens up space for each member to be accepted, valued and loved from the heart.
